August 17 2006

Created by scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, based on ordinary plush toys, robotic teddy bear not only entertains the patient, but also helps doctors monitor his condition.

His name Huggable - which in English means "one who can embrace." Numerous sensors, cameras, microphones and mobile elements placed under the fur and a soft layer of silicone and allows the robot to fix the man's presence and respond to a variety of ways.

Huggable, thanks to microphones in the ears, may determine the source of sound in the room, and sophisticated video camera located in his eyes, allow it to distinguish faces of familiar people. A teddy bear is able to turn his head to the side talking to him man to welcome his facial expressions and words, and even reciprocate by tiskane and hugs.

Huggable should capture changes in behavior and condition of patients and alert your doctor. If the patient shows signs of irritation, for example, throws or drops a bear on the floor or playing with him less than usual, the alarm will be delivered to a remote computer located in a room nurses.
