Robots learned to communicate and coordinate their emotions

August 6 2007

Swedish engineer Mattias Jakobsson from the laboratory of future applications of Victoria Institute, Gothenburg, created a group of unusual robots GlowBots, able to communicate both with their own and each other, and also copy the behavior of several pets.

Robot GlowBot - round, flat object the size of an ordinary mug. It is equipped with eight infrared sensors, 148 colored LEDs that light up individually capable, camera, three microphones, three-axis accelerometer, motors and wheels, a speaker, a computer to control all of these management and wireless Bluetooth.

Communication is of such machines is not by words but by changing a variety of images, consisting of lights on their backs, and it is not preinstalled image - machine can generate a nearly infinite number depending on the mood ....

If a couple dozen GlowBots release "at will", each will display a unique example of the figure. In the case where two such robots meet, they exchange information on their lights and work together to create a more complex pattern. As a result, over time, figures on robots go away from the primary, reflecting a kind of social interaction machines.

What happens when a robot experiences a human being? The latter can take GlowBot on your hands, just touch it, or "puzzle" machine by any sound, or simply put your hand on a table nearby. Robot is able to distinguish between all these interactions and in some way reflects their "experiences" in the illustration on the back.

Even more interesting is that, like the bee in the hive dance tells about the location of flowers, GlowBot share with their relatives that lived through. This changes the sample drawings on the backs of the neighbors, and further along the chain affects the lights on these robots. But the touch of one or another robot in a certain way to temporarily block the picture.

"It's not like a relationship that the owners are building a cat or dog - says the author of an unusual project. - Rather, this experience will be of interest to man, which involves breeding of spiders or lizards. In general, the owners of these machines often give them names, and generally treated as a pet. This writes Membrana.
