Discounted Pipe Estonians: discovered pipeline to pump vodka

In Estonia, the 11 suspects appeared in court on charges of laying a 2-kilometer underwater pipeline for illegal swapping of vodka from Russia.

Among the suspects citizens of Estonia and Russia. The four defendants, which the investigation considers the main organizers - ethnic Russian, the agency said.

The pipeline was laid along the bottom of a reservoir on the border of Estonia and Russia.

According to prosecutors, from August to November 2004, smugglers are siphoned by its pipeline of at least 6,200 liters of alcohol, to avoid paying excise taxes in Estonia's coffers to 57,000 euros (900,000 kroons).

"This may sound strange and unbelievable, but it is a very real criminal case," - spokeswoman Virusskoy District Prosecutor Marie Luuk.

Estonia joined the EU in May 2004. Vodka in Estonia is approximately one and a half times more expensive than in Russia.
