The inhabitants of Iceland have survived the Ice Age

July 24 2007

Icelandic scientists have discovered two species of amphipods (crustaceans raznonogie), found only in underground waters of Iceland. The researchers explain this by the fact that the animals survived the ice age in some shelter under the glaciers.

Amphipods can not be carried by people or birds, say the authors of the study. Since the end of the last glacial period in this species was not enough time to develop. Therefore, scientists believe that the amphipods were in Iceland for 30 - 40 million years ago, when as a result of volcanic eruptions formed the island. If their theory is correct, then discovered the oldest inhabitants of Iceland, transmits radio "Liberty" .
