The basis for the cheap fuel in Japan are straw and mold

August 22 2008

The Japanese company engaged in the manufacture of sake, has developed technology to produce cheap ethanol from rice straw.

Alcohol for the needs of the automobile industry is possible without significant power consumption to obtain not only of rice but also from non-edible cellulose. Microorganisms break down cellulose, in particular, to glucose without the participation of strong catalysts. The company's specialists have modified at the gene level mold Aspergillus fungi (called koji mold), which are commonly used in the production of sake. The resulting form of mold breaks down solid cellulose into glucose for fermentation and to obtain alcohol. Until now it was used sulfuric acid or hot water under high pressure, so as cellulose chemically stable and has a solid structure.

A more detailed description of the technology will be unveiled in late August, after improvement of the results achieved in conjunction with the Universities of Osaka and Kobe, reports Regnum .
