The world's largest island is ready to become an independent state

May 20 2009

Greenland may soon become an independent state. On Tuesday, Denmark's parliament approved a law on the extended autonomy of the island territory, which has more than 300 years, is part of the kingdom.

The new regime, introduced as a result of negotiations with Copenhagen, in particular, provides Greenlanders right to dispose of their own natural resources - oil and natural gas, gold and diamonds, zinc, lead and uranium.

In general, the results of the referendum in Greenland are considered as a key step towards the attainment of the island's sovereignty. Officially, the new status of Greenland will be proclaimed National Day June 21, 2009 in the presence of Queen Margrethe II and Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

Recall that the world's largest island, much of which lies above the Arctic Circle, formerly was a member of the Danish kingdom as a colony, then - the province and, finally, to this day - as an autonomous territory.
