Greek hackers broke into the site of the Large Hadron Collider

September 15 2008

Organized actions of hackers from Greece on Sept. 12 allowed to hack a computer system CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), an organization under the leadership that created the Large Hadron Collider. As reported by The Telegraph, the hackers posted on the organization's website the text of the Greek language under the headline "GST: Greek Security Team".

Computer hackers gained access to the server running Compact Muon Solenoid (Compact Muon Solenoid, CMS). CMS is engaged in tracking the data in the collision of elementary particles in the LHC accelerator.
As a result, Web-based attacks, hackers have damaged one of the files CERN, and the site ceased to be accessible to users.
Burglars were "one step" from the shutdown solenoid. However, so far as the Greeks were not going to go. Their goal was to demonstrate the vulnerability of computer systems project, which was allocated $ 6 billion.
According to the publication, the attacks of CERN were 9 and 10 September, when the Large Hadron Collider was launched first beam of protons.
Large Hadron Collider was built on the border between Switzerland and France under the leadership of the European Centre for Nuclear Research. For him, used the 27-kilometer underground tunnel of another accelerator - shut down the electron-positron collider LEP. The tunnel is laid at a depth of 100 meters.

LHC is designed in particular to obtain information about the so-called Higgs boson, predicted by British physicist Peter Higgs in 1960. In the framework of existing concepts, this particle is responsible for the mass of elementary particles. To detect traces of this particle are the two largest detector LHC - CMS and ATLAS.
