Grass grows in the morning

July 12 2007

The activity of most plants and animals change over a 24-hour cycle. Scientists first demonstrated by the example of the daily rhythm of growth, the plant will agree on their internal clock signals from the environment.

Using time-lapse capture still frames, Kazunari Nodzue with colleagues from the University of California Davis and University of Lausanne, Switzerland, found that the shoots of grass Arabidopsis exhibit strong growth once a day.

The timing of the burst of growth is controlled both by the internal clock plants and the influence of an external source of light. When seedlings were grown under constant artificial light, the greatest growth occurred in the late afternoon. But when the plants were transferred to more natural conditions svetotemnovogo cycle of day and night, while growth shifted several hours, and occurred just before dawn. In nature, this is the moment when the water is usually available in most plants, transmits radio "Liberty".
