American divers have found the legendary pirate ship

December 17 2007

Group of divers research group at Indiana University found off the coast of the Dominican Republic remains of a pirate ship abandoned by Captain Kidd in the famous 17 th century. Experts confirmed that the vessel "Kvedag Merchant," which treasure hunters have searched for centuries.

Head of marine archaeologists - Charles Beeker - said that his team won the right to explore the wreck and turning it into a kind of underwater museum. It is surprising that for many centuries, this ship is none found, although its skeleton lies at a depth of three meters, twenty meters from the island of Catalina.

"During my career I have visited thousands of places of shipwreck, - said Beeker - and this is one of the first where I see no signs of robbery. Intact remains lie in the crystal clear water. We wish them well and leave, so have taken measures to protect the site from looting. " According to one of the study participants, an underwater archaeologist John Foster of California, find is of historical value, since it may be an important source of information about William Kidd and piracy in the Caribbean.

Historians argue whether Kidd pirate or kaperstvoval during the war with France, the League of Augsburg - ran the ship, paid by the State to attack the ships of other countries in wartime. Whatever it was, after the conclusion of peace between England and France Kidd, who had at the hands of royal charter - the right to plunder the French ships - was outlawed and some time later hanged. Before leaving for New York, where Kidd was trying to prove his innocence, he left "Kvedag Merchant loyal sailors, who, according to Indiana University anthropologist Jeffrey Conrad, looted the ship, set it on fire and down by the Rio Dulce.

Conrad argues that the location of the ship, the shape and size of the cannon which was used as ballast, are consistent with historical records. Under the guns were also found fragments of several anchors. "All evidence we have found underwater, coincide with what we know from the rich historical documents - says Konrad - after a thorough archaeological study, we definitively prove that this ship of Captain Kidd." This writes a naval site - referring to the English-language sources.
