Astronomers have measured the temperature of the Great Red Spot on Jupiter

March 17 2010

Scientists at the European Southern Observatory first received thermal image and map the temperature distribution of the Great Red Spot on Jupiter - is not clear bright red whirlwind that people can see for several hundred years.

Observations showed that most red areas of the Great Red Spot, whose size is equal to three diameters of the Earth, and the average temperature - 160 degrees Celsius below zero, correspond to relatively warm core storm, which is surrounded by the colder outer vortices. The image visible dark streaks on the edge of the hurricane, where the gases fall into the depths of Jupiter.
