Dolphin rescued from the deaths of two whales

March 12 2008

Dolphin helped back to sea two whales. Animals lost the ability to navigate underwater and swam in the shallow waters in New Zealand, reports the Associated Press. Two pygmy sperm whales - mother and cub - washed ashore near Mahia Beach, about 500 km north-east of the capital Wellington. Rescuers spent more than an hour to ensure that the whales back to sea. However, after some time everything had to begin all over again - whales, lost orientation, four times the return on a sandy beach. They could not find my way back out to sea and dumped on the shore again and again. It seemed as if the animals are doomed to a long and painful death, and rescue workers have already thought about to be put to sleep. But here to help people and whales unexpectedly came to another marine life - bottlenose dolphin named Moko. He has already become a favorite of locals, as they often swam near the shore and playing with people. According to witnesses, Moko swam with whales and began leading them away from the sandy beach. That's how close they sailed about 200 feet - along the coast, then across the Straits to open sea. Employee of the National Museum of New Zealand, an expert on marine mammals Anton van Helden said: feat dolphin Moko - "amazing", but it is quite plausible event. According to the biologist, these members of the order of whales have "very great ability to altruistic behavior." Experts believe that Moko came to the rescue when he heard a signal that the whales are likely to serve, got into trouble. After the rescue operation was completed, the dolphin returned to the shore and began, as usual, frolic in the water next to people, RIA-Novosti.
