Star explodes 70 days

May 9 2007

NASA astronomers recorded the explosion of a star that is 150 times larger than the Sun. It was the brightest supernova ever recorded celestial body.

Star was discovered in September last year, and at the same time received the code name SN 2006DZHI (gy). Peak explosion lasted about 70 days. Star is at a distance of about 240 million light-years from Earth.

Something like that astronomers expect in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. A huge star Eta Carina in 7500 light years away exploded about the same. Light from it will be so bright that the consequences of the explosion will be visible even in daylight, reports RSN.
