Detected galaxies is ten times greater than the Milky Way

August 8 2007

With the help of a telescope Spitzer astronomers have found four large galaxies merging into one giant, which will be approximately ten times more than the Milky Way. This is the largest merger of galaxies ever observed, according to a press release from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Astronomers say that the coming merger of galaxies should shed light on this extremely rare process and show how the galaxies formed over billions of years. In addition, specialists are going to get an answer to why some galaxies in the process of star formation is active, and the other billions of years have not created a single star.

Cluster, which was already formed now, and which eventually turn into large galaxies, located at a distance of 5 billion light years from Earth.

Collisions and mergers of galaxies - a phenomenon not uncommon. Mergers one big galaxy with several small well-documented. Astronomers have seen and the merger of two galaxies that are close in size. But so far no one has seen the merger more than two large galaxies. Reports Trud.
