Fish count the relatives

March 5 2008

Fish can count - is the conclusion that Italian scientists from the University of Padua, who conducted the study over the shoals of the North American gambuzy. "We received clear evidence that fish have a rudimentary ability to count", - said the professor of experimental psychology, Christian Agrillo.

Previously, experts believed that the fish have the ability to distinguish only large flocks of small ones. Last year, the same group of scientists has traced how the fish female, wishing to avoid the attentions of males, hiding in the neighboring flocks of fish, while choosing the largest. However, recent studies have shown that gambuzii can also count the number of its neighbors, if not more than four.

In recent studies, scientists have traced how females choose which group to join, if the number of fish in them no more than four. The observations showed that females are attracted to larger groups, preferring to four fish to three and three to two. With regard to large numbers of fish that they can not assume, however, may differ from each other, if their ratio is 2:1. For example, fish could distinguish between a flock of sixteen fish from the pack of eight, but did not see the difference between eight and twelve fish, says RBC with reference to the British media.

Scientists think "believe" animals - monkeys, dolphins, raccoons, rats and parrots. According to scientists, numeracy fish similar to the ability of monkeys and even infants under one year, says RBC.
