Future - for Bioengineering and transgenic foods?

August 31 2005

While the world has come relatively quiet with regard to genetically modified foods, Russia has yet to develop a law on biological safety. Thus, at a conference held recently in Baku, a declaration was adopted, according to which governments of the CIS is proposed to introduce a moratorium on genetic modification of foods and completely ban their use in infant formulas.

Market transgenic products is growing rapidly, despite all obstacles, and by next year, its total volume can leave a nearly $ 4 billion. In the U.S., for example, more than 160 million acres of area allocated under genetically modified crops.

The dispute about the dangers of modified foods and supplements is modified for a long time: in the mid-90's first reports about their health risks. Europe lifted its ban on imports of transgenic products only after America threatened tough sanctions against recalcitrant European states.

In Russia, in turn, some time ago a discussion about the need to resolve - is to bring in or better yet ban. As a result, late last year in Rospotrebnadzor agreed that the foods that contain transgenes, relevant to the nutritional value and safety of their traditional counterparts, are permitted for sale on the territory of Russia. Most often genetically modified ingredients (MMC) are found in products containing soy, meat products and bakery products.

Meanwhile, states that the imported food transgenes occur much more frequently - a leader in the production of such products are the United States and Germany. It is also noteworthy that identified numerous cases of falsification of these products when they submitted documents that declared by the absence of MMC.

According to many experts successful, at least from a scientific point of view of experiments with products containing MMC, in particular rice, can lead to another boom in the breeding of other crops and, accordingly, to the next "green revolution".

Another thing is that the world may not be ready for the new shocks. Expectations that the new technologies in the food industry, will be accepted without much difficulty, turned out to be unfeasible. "We're at an impasse on the issue of new food products with CIM," - said Michael Roudmeyer, executive director of the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology.

However, the transgene product appears on the shelves of more and more every year. Reasons are extremely simple: they are cheaper to manufacture, cultivation of crops - is easier and more profitable. In addition, their distribution is provided, at least in third world countries and the CIS.

That is why lately it comes to a possible second generation of genetically modified products, ie even more "perfect" food. This invariably will lead to even more sophisticated combination of dissimilar genes.

Despite the continuing development of enrichment with minerals and vitamins all sorts of food, some scientists call still not learned to stop questionable until the end of production and a fresh look at the technology used, because the risk associated with the modification of the product may simply be underestimated, and the consequences of catastrophic .
