High-molecular secret of the new display

OLED-technology, based on the use of organic light-emitting diodes, now attracts much attention. In them is seen the mass of very promising opportunities, and they are considered one of the fastest growing areas of nano-electronics. And contrary to rumors of impending congestion in the area of technological innovations, the end they have not seen.

British scientists, in particular, have developed a unique semiconductor polymer, which can pass electrical impulses at a rate that inspires serious optimism. With this polymer innovation can even compete with silicon cells and silicon semiconductors, widely used in computers and peripherals.

The company Merck Chemicals, which manufactures liquid crystal and belongs to a promising opening, are already making predictions about the next generation of flexible, ultra-light and low-cost electronic devices . This applies, above all, television screens and mobile phones with high resolution. This is a fundamentally new type of display, in the manufacture of which will be used are different from traditional materials.

Specialists also do not exclude that due to the polymer experiments with electronic paper will become bolder (Philips is not so long ago, unveiled a prototype ePaper, which is easily rolled into a roll).

"It's very interesting work - said Jon de Mello, an expert in nano-technology-oriented research of organic semiconductors. - It represents a significant step in the use of semiconducting polymers as functional materials for the production of circuit boards.

With regard to the polymer, the first thing that draws attention - its physical characteristics. In this case, among the main advantages of the material, known as polythiophene (polythiophene), which the developers have not yet spread, allocated its strength and compactness. This is certainly very important for producers of flat products.

The test results showed that chips based on polythiophene 6 times faster than those based on any other elements of the polymer and nearly comparable to that of silicon used in the production of LCD panels .

In addition, a simplified process using the new polymer also distinguishes it from the nearest "rivals", since a small amount of liquid material is easily applied to the required detail. Chinese manufacturers will especially appreciate this crucial time, as comfortable with novelty.

Meanwhile, the company Universal Display Corporation intends shortly to set up production of full-color OLED-display with active matrix . At the same time as the material used is flexible metal foil.

Its thickness does not exceed 0,1 mm. Diagonal existing prototype display is not more than 4 inches, but this is only the beginning. Model weight 6 grams, while the LCD display would have a thickness of 1 mm and weighs about 30 grams. The new screen features high-definition images, and on it you can watch full movies.

ujitsu, in turn, in the middle of last year announced its own flexible electronic display on the basis of one type of electronic paper.
