Buses Rutmaster "and the Great Smog - two legendary miracle of London

December 9 2009

9 December in London was recorded most deadly smoke - the Great Smog. Because of him in the capital of Great Britain died approximately   3500-4000   people, mostly elderly and children - they all have low symptoms of acute bronchitis. In this case, the British government at first refused to accept the fact that these deaths were the consequence of smog from heavy burning of coal, attributing the tragedy of the alleged outbreak of a flu epidemic.

For the first time the term "smog" was coined by Dr. Henry Antoine de Vaux in 1905 in his article "Fog and Smoke," written for the Congress of Public Health. The very same problem of smoke pollution in London had already existed in the Middle Ages. In 1273 the English King Edward I issued a decree banning the use of coal in the city due to heavy smoke produced by burning them. Smog has become an integral part of London in the late XIX century and was named «pea-souper» (that is, like pea soup - thick and yellow).

Currently in London, could such a strong thing of the past - due to an active policy of environmental protection.

December 9, 2005 in London ended operation "Rutmasterov" - the famous double-decker red buses. This type of vehicle (Dabldeker)   was created in 1954 by AEC and was operated by the British capital since February 8, 1956 to December 9, 2005. During this time, "Rutmaster" became a symbol of London, and perhaps the most recognizable coach in the world.

"Rutmastery" the first series were put into operation to replace the trolleybuses. This process is fully completed by May 1962. Last "Rutmaster" started to work on the streets of London in 1968. Buses of the first series had a length of 27 feet and six inches, more recent "Rutmastery were long - 30 feet.

This unusual bus has won huge popularity among Londoners and visitors of the British capital. The reason for this was a feature of the design of the bus - the rear open platform through which the entrance and exit to the bus. Bus door had not, but had a second floor. The open platform allows fast and go into the bus, thus not only at bus stops, but also when standing at the crossroads or in a traffic jam. Some even believe that this opportunity to freely leave and enter corresponded to the English spirit of freedom.

The main reasons for writing off "Rutmasterov were unsafe open platform bus inconvenience for the elderly and passengers with prams, disabled people (in general, by 2017 all UK public transport should be available for these categories of passengers), technical obsolescence, and the purpose of economy: modern Buses do not need conductors.

Meanwhile, over the years about "Rutmasterov" shaped an entire culture. For example, the first row of seats on the top floor was the "love corner", and many conductors, in addition to the performance of its core responsibilities, often entertained the passengers with jokes, which created a special welcoming atmosphere.

Scripture "Rutmasterov began in 1982, but in 1992 the remaining buses were repairs, after which you can use them for another ten years. End-period double-decker buses do not give up for scrap and sold to all comers. Price "Rutmastera" is about two thousand pounds. Many of these buses back on the streets of London - now they carry tourists.

December 9, 1989 went under the hammer is the most expensive in the world of work by an unknown artist. Cloth "Departure of the Argonauts" by an unknown master of the Italian school, which dates back to 1487 year, was sold at auction "Sotheby's" for 4.2 million pounds sterling.
