Devendra Banhart - "King. Just King "

June 23 2006

Banhart was born in 1981 in Texas, but grew up in Venezuela, and Los Angeles. Translated from the Indian name "Devendra" means neither more nor less, "the king of the gods." So the singer called a wise Indian, a friend of his parents. When they showed the Hindu photograph her son, he seems guided by some specific oriental scientist, chose this name.

Since childhood, Devendra got carried away playing the guitar and drawing. The turning point in his life was studying at the Art Institute of San Francisco: thanks to the support of Bill Berksona, poet and professor of the Institute, Banhart began writing songs. Normal recording technique he was not, and sometimes it happened that, walking down the street, he called his friend and asked to include voice mail, to sing it a song. Then Devendra came to rent a tape recorder and copied a song with an answering machine.

Soon, Devendra left the Art Institute, began to speak, and here he was lucky: the musician said Michael Gira (Michael Gira), last leader of the legendary band «Swans» and a host of respected record label Young God Records. After becoming acquainted with Michael affairs Devendra sharply went up the hill. In October 2002, Jira issues early material Devendra Banharta, which causes considerable interest among the public. Banhart has become the most famous representative of the "new weird folk" or "neofolk". Then, in 2004 the world saw two albums of the singer: Rejoicing in the Hands and Niño Rojo, received a benevolent reviews in the press.

Some, however, responded less flattering about the musician, remembering him one of the features of his singing: the use of admission "tremolo". In simple terms, individuals do not like the fact that the singer makes sounds that resemble the bleating. Nevertheless, n lastinka Rejoicing in the Hands of Honor was on the stands in London's Virgin stores and HMV, a British magazine Time Out put it into first place in the section "Native and the present."

In 2005 the artist released another CD called Cripple Crow, which accompanies his acoustic guitar instrumental band, contributing to the sound of Latin American and ethnic motifs. In the recording of this album was attended by the leader of the group Vetiver Andy Kebik, Tom Monahan of the Pernice Brothers Group and many other musicians.

Devendra attracted the attention of not only music, but a bright imaginative lyrics, and his image. Themes of his songs - most varied: from antiwar to fabulous and completely frivolous (Peter Pan, or the musician's beard). As for appearance, the singer has considerable charisma and is very similar to the Eastern Prince with stained eyes and mustache.

The success of this artist can be explained by the fact that his music covers several areas, and thus may be interested in a broad audience. Judge for yourself: an artist compared to Bob Dylan, Marc Bolan, Vetiver, Bright Eyes, Tim Buckley, and even with Syd Barrett. His style of singing is a bit like Billie Holiday, Karen Dalton, and Sweet, Brian Ferry and Boy George. The penetration performance of Devendra once even compared with George Harrison during his hobbies of Indian culture.

Among his favorite artists Devendra calls Vashti Bunyan, Linda Perhaks, Ella Jenkins, and while the singer is not enthusiastic about the fact that people now know almost nothing about this artist, while all on hearing the names of all sorts of mediocrity. With great admiration, he spoke about the work of Karen Dalton, a singer who is also very few people now know, despite her unique voice.

Interests of the artist are not limited to music. He still enjoys the fine arts.Banhart a lot of draws, he even made their own drawings from the book under a strange name «Rejoicing in the Hands of the Golden Negress and Being Washed by Her Floating Beard». According to rumors, this book has not yet been published.

Critics argue that the merit Banhart is that he managed to change the attitude of the songs for an acoustic guitar. Once upon a time artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez were interesting to the general public and can keep on their toes huge halls during the performance of their acoustic songs. More recently, become popular "multi-layered studio crafts", which was a lot of things are mixed, but often to no avail. This situation changed with Devendra, who introduced the fashion of archival quiet neshlyagerny bard-folk. It is called the opening of 2005 and predict a great future.
